From History to the Future: Showcasing the Eyewear Heritage of Belluno

Certottica Group presents the exhibition “We Are Not Eternal. From Birth to Rebirth of Historic Eyewear” as part of the OPTI-RAIL Project. Opening on August 2 at the Eyewear Museum in Pieve di Cadore.

An engaging journey through the life and preservation of vintage eyewear made from cellulose nitrate and acetate—blending science, history, and passion—where conservation becomes a true rebirth.

Thanks to Certottica Group, the multidisciplinary hub and industry reference point in eyewear, the exhibition “We Are Not Eternal. From Birth to Rebirth of Historic Eyewear” comes to life. It will be held at the Eyewear Museum (Le Folles Hall) from August 2, 2025, to January 17, 2026.The exhibition, part of the OPTI-RAIL project funded by the Interreg VI-A Italy – Austria CLLD Dolomiti Live 2021–2027 Programme, traces the lifecycle of the plastic materials used in eyewear production—from processing to degradation, and on to innovative restoration practices.

A CULTURAL ENHANCEMENT PROJECT

Led by Certottica Group, in collaboration with Verein der Eisenbahnfreunde (operator of the Railway Museum in Lienz), the OPTI-RAIL Project is committed to preserving and promoting two authentic symbols of the Dolomiti Live area: the historic eyewear of the Eyewear District and the vintage diesel locomotive 2043.49. This cross-border initiative highlights the value of cooperation in safeguarding cultural and historical heritage.

The historic frames display visible signs of aging and degradation, with some lenses appearing cloudy or damaged, illustrating the preservation challenges faced by cellulose nitrate and acetate eyewear materials over time.

EXHIBITION OPENING

The exhibition will be inaugurated on Saturday, August 2 at 11:00 AM at the museum. In attendance will be Alice Hansen, restorer for the Ministry of Culture and the ARTES company, who is overseeing the restoration phases of the plastic eyewear featured in the OPTI-RAIL project.

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS

The exhibit begins with an in-depth exploration of the materials used in historic eyewear—such as cellulose nitrate and acetate—examining the complex degradation processes they undergo, including the notorious “vinegar syndrome.” It continues with the delicate art of restoration, from cataloging and cleaning to the consolidation of the eyewear pieces.
