Safilens Launches DELIVERY RIBO New Riboflavin-Based Daily Contact Lenses Made for Digital Device Users

Safilens expands its highly innovative product range with DELIVERY RIBO, a state-of-the-art contact lens in its field. The DELIVERY RIBO lens is designed for those who constantly engage in activities in front of digital devices, with the aim of providing accommodative support to limit visual stress and protect the cornea, crystalline lens and retina from the harmful wavelengths of HEV light through the release of dedicated Lachryceuticals.

High-energy visible (HEV) light is widespread in our daily lives, from natural sources like the sun and from artificial sources like computer screens, smartphones and other digital devices. HEV light penetrates deeper than UV rays, causing photoaging of collagen and elastin. Prolonged exposure has been correlated to an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that can lead to loss of central vision.

“With our R&D unit, we wanted to develop a CL capable of achieving greater functionality and efficacy for today’s wearers. We live in an era in which we cannot do without the daily use of digital devices. This habit leads to continuous exposure to high-energy visible light (HEV) emitted by those devices, including blue light. These wavelengths can cause eyestrain, dry eyes and sleep disturbance. As the use of digital devices continues to grow, it is also crucial to be aware of the potential risks and take action to protect our health long-term,” stated Daniele Bazzocchi, General Manager of Safilens.

DELIVERY RIBO are lenses that release Riboflavin, Vitamin E-TPGS, Hyaluronic acid and TSP.

Vitamin E-TPGS is a permeation enhancer that allows the substances released to be diffused in both the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. Combined, Riboflavin or Vitamin B2, important for eye health, and Vitamin E-TPGS protect the cornea, crystalline lens and retina, because they shield the ocular surface from UV and HEV light, protecting the retina and superficial epithelial cells from UV radiation damage. They also serve as scavengers, transforming reactive oxygen species (ROS) into nonradicals, free of reactivity and thus of toxicity, restoring homeostasis of the eye, mitigating photo-oxidative damage and slowing the processes of premature aging. Both TSP (Tamarind Seed Polysaccharide) and Hyaluronic acid are natural polysaccharides frequently used in artificial tears and, with their lubricating, mucus-mimicking and mucus-adhesive properties, contribute to stabilizing the tear film and improving tolerability and comfort of contact lenses.

The geometry of DELIVERY RIBO is by extended depth of focus (EDOF), in other words, capable of limiting accommodative effort by the wearer, without altering distance vision.

The international launch will take place at 100% Optical in London, 1 -3 March 2025.
