The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has updated its vision care policy, officially removing AI smart glasses from its coverage and imposing strict workplace restrictions due to security and privacy risks.
What are AI Glasses?
AI glasses, like Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta, look like ordinary eyewear but contain discreet cameras, microphones, speakers, and wireless transmitters. They allow users to take calls, listen to music, and record video hands-free.
Security and Privacy Restrictions
Because of their recording and communication capabilities, the Department of National Defence (DND) and the CAF have implemented strict rules:
- Strict Ban in Secure Areas:AI glasses are completely forbidden in all Operations, Security, and High Security Zones. This applies even if the device is turned off or in “airplane mode.”
- Privacy Protection:Unauthorized filming or photography of personnel is strictly prohibited and subject to disciplinary action.
- Workplace Rules:Restrictions on devices with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, audio, or video capabilities may expand in the future.
Impact on Funding and Reimbursement
CAF members can no longer use their $600 vision care entitlement to purchase AI glasses. Future purchases of these devices will be entirely at the member’s expense.
Grace Period for Recent Purchases:
Members who purchased AI glasses in good faith prior to this policy change, and who work in areas where they are banned, may be eligible to receive a regular pair of glasses. To apply, members must submit their request and invoice to their CF Health Services Centre no later than September 15, 2026 for a case-by-case review.
