Centennial Optical Collaborates With Ió:Ken Designs to Create an Indigenous Culturally Inspired Frame Line

A new designer eyewear business has emerged in Akwesasne, Canada. The trendy frames of Io:ken Designs features original artwork by Mohawk artist, Bruce Boots, that is not only beautiful but steeped in cultural designs that speak to the honour, pride and history of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people and other Indigenous Nations.

Ió:ken which is pronounced Yo:kenh or Yo:gah and translates to “It’s Clear” in the Kanien’keha (Mohawk) language was born out of a dynamic partnership with Artist Bruce Boots, Dr. Danielle Dubuc, Optometrist and Project Manager, Gail Mc Donald who were inspired to create designer eyewear that would represent and honour Indigenous peoples and their strong and resilient cultures.

A Perfect Partnership

Centennial Optical Limited, was the partner of choice when it came to finding a successful frame development, manufacturing and distribution partner. Allen Nightingale, President of Centennial Optical, said “Our team is excited about this collaboration. The collection is not just another frame label; it’s an art form that tells a powerful story. The frames are beautifully crafted and will stand out to anyone looking for authentic designs.”

Dr. Dubuc agrees; “I have been working in the Akwesasne Community for over 30 years. I have always wanted to create eyewear designed to represent the culture and to honour the people of the community. This line has been in demand for many years, and we are excited to see it come to life.” Project Manager, Gail Mc Donald added, “We are thrilled that Centennial Optical is on this journey with us. We were looking for a partner that shares our vision and values and understands the importance of community and history; we received this and more with Centennial Optical. “

Cultural Artistry Meets Modern Design

Each frame in the new line will feature beautifully illustrated temple designs created by well-known artist Bruce Boots. He incorporates cultural designs that will include the Hiawatha Belt, the Eagle Feather, Our Clans, Berries and Beads, Seven Generations and the Celestial Sky Domes. These designs coupled with trendy frame shapes, in a range of colours and sizes, is a winning combination.
